Second Publication (2014)

In the competition to become the author of the new Hector the Lump of Coal book, it actually was not required of the contestants to illustrate their books! I just went above and beyond to write and illustrate my own book which is probably why I won even in the open adult category! After I won they asked me if I could illustrate the second place winner’s book… therefore making me a 2x published artist.

Now I know what you might be thinking…. Why was I promoting the mining of fossil fuels at such a young age? That’s simple, I genuinely did not understand the environmental impacts at such a young age. I am thankful for the opportunity to have won the competition and become a 2x published author and illustrator, however now as an adult I have an entirely different perspective on this industry. As a young girl growing up in my hometown the primary industries were and still are both coal mining and cane sugar, I thought this was a positive thing that brought jobs and livelihood to everyone in my town. I now understand and advocate the importance of switching to green energy sources and the environmental impact that coal mining has on the earth.

As someone with a focus on sustainability, I always try to source recyclable packaging options to reduce my personal impact on the earth caused by my business.
